I believe that at fundamental approach to patient care involves communication, information, and complete understanding on the part of the caregiver. In my practice I encounter a large number of patients who are dealing with hypertension, type II diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and coronary artery disease. Many are stricken due to their lack of understanding regarding their disease processes. I try to explain the complexities of medicine in the commonest of terms so that both patient-and-provider understand what is expected and what modalities may be used to achieve maximum patient benefit. Oftentimes patients want more than a prescription, but rather an explanation of why a new medication is being given to them. Understanding a patient's concerns are one of the most rewarding facets of medical care.
